First Year iY-1 Program at a Glance

Undergraduate students can start their degree in your own country and transfer with credentials to a top US university.

Our mission is to make the transition between high school and university a time of inspiration, experiential learning, and growth for international students (not a test prep year). Interlearn places talented international students into a blended learning, three-part program that prepares them academically and culturally for a successful transition into the American mainstream and US university life. Interlearn students do not need to take the SAT or TOEFL exams, making Interlearn more affordable than direct admission to US universities.

Are you interested in partnering with us? Click here and let’s get started.
  • Which programs does Interlearn offer for students and families?
Our flagship program is International Year One (iY-1) and is designed for students aiming to complete their four-year undergraduate degree at a U.S. university. We offer as well graduate degrees, online education, and more. If you are interested in studying in the U.S. but do not believe our current programs meet your needs, please reach out – we may have just the program you need.
  • What is the International Year One (iY-1) Program?
Interlearn’s flagship iY-1 Program is a credit-bearing academic admission and transition program designed for international students. It begins with two semesters study in the student’s home country, continues with a summer term on a U.S. university campus, and culminates in admission to the second year of the student's selected university.
  • What are the key benefits of the iY-1 Program?
Students get streamlined admission and better preparation to succeed once they arrive at their U.S. university. As an iY-1 student, you do not have to complete standardized English testing, you get extended preparation time, instruction from both local and U.S. university faculty, and financial savings on your first-year tuition and living expenses. Scholarships for the full degree are granted on the basis of merit to all students. And all your courses carry U.S. university credit. Our data show that students in iY-1 are better prepared and more likely to complete their undergraduate degree within four years than typical international students.
  • When do Interlearn programs typically start?
Most students begin study during September, although contingency plans are available for a later fall start or even a spring semester.
  • How does the iY-1 Program help students prepare for university life in the United States?
In addition to credit-bearing courses taught by actual Syracuse University professors, we provide language training and cultural skills modules. By the time students arrive in the United States, they are prepared academically, linguistically, and culturally for success.
  • Which students are eligible for the iY-1 Program?
Students hoping to enroll must have completed 11th grade, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and meet our English language proficiency standards (without the need for TOEFL or other tests). Interested in enrolling? Sign up for an interview with one of our representatives here.
  • What are the academic requirements for progressing from the iY-1 Program to a university campus?
During your first year, simply maintain a good GPA without receiving any failing grades, pass the English for Academic Purposes courses, and you will be on your way to the United States. Are you worried about your GPA? The specific requirements vary according to the specific university and major, but generally so long as you maintain a 3.0 during that first year you can study at any of our partner universities. And if you for any reason fall below a 3.0, we have options available as well that assure your progression to the US.
  • Which universities partner with Interlearn?
Our current university partners include Syracuse University, Pace University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. We continue to add new partners so please check back frequently.
  • What type of courses and subjects do students take in iY-1?
Our programs feature a diverse range of university-level credit-bearing courses and routes to degrees in fields including Data Science, Engineering, Microeconomics, Business Statistics, and captivating Humanities / Social Science courses such as World Cinema or Environmentalism. All fields and majors are open to you. Our English for Academic Purposes course is tailored to prepare you for every major. And our all our courses provide a holistic learning experience that ensure for you a bright academic future.
